Guys, we’ve got a leaked conversation between a film distributor in Nepal and a Hollywood film; yes, between a film distributor and a Hollywood film. Repeating that again, just in case you got confused. Here it is. (And of course, you’re reading it exclusively on NeoStuffs.)

Film: Hey, I got to go to the theater.
Distributor: You can’t. Entry is only allowed to superhero flicks and Disney films.
Film: But, but I am a Christopher Nolan film.
Distributor: F*ck off!

Not even kidding! That’s a real conversation.

On a serious note; that’s true. Some of the finest Hollywood films didn’t make it to the Nepali theaters last year (like every other year). Here’s the list of ten of this year’s Oscar-nominated films that didn’t release in Nepal.

The Shape of Water (13 nominations)

With 13 nominations – including Best Picture, Best Actress in a Leading Role (Sally Hawkins), Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Richard Jenkins), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Octavia Spencer) and Best Director (Guillermo del Toro) – The Shape of Water is leading the nominations this year. Set in the 1960s, the fantasy film is about a mute janitor who forms a unique bond with a creature being held there in captivity.

Dunkirk (8 nominations)

Director Christopher Nolan’s war drama, Dunkirk, is based on the true events that took place during World War II when allied soldiers from France, Belgium and the British Empire were surrounded by German soldiers on the beaches of Dunkirk, France.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (7 nominations)

Directed by Martin McDonagh; Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is the story of a mother who puts up three billboards directed at local police, asking them why they haven’t solved her daughter’s rape-murder case. Frances McDormand has earned herself a Best Actress in a Leading Role nomination for her spectacular performance in the film.

Darkest Hour (6 nominations)

The biopic of the former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Darkest Hour is set in the beginning of World War II. The story revolves around the newly appointed Prime Minister who must decide whether to join war or negotiate with Hitler. Gary Oldman – who is the Best Actor nominee – already has won a Golden Globe for his performance.

Phantom Thread (6 nominations)

Phantom Thread – set in the 1950s – focuses on a famous dressmaker whose life is transformed when he falls in love with a younger woman. Three-time Oscar winning actor Daniel Day Lewis – who announced last year that this would be his last film – is up for Best Actor for his role as Reynold Woodcock in the film.

Lady Bird (5 nominations)

At 23, Saoirse Ronan already has received three Oscar nominations; the latest one being for her role Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson in Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut, Lady Bird. The film revolves around a precocious teen on the brink of adulthood.

Get Out (4 nominations)

Get Out is one of 2017’s – in fact, one of the best satirical horror films ever made. Director Jordan Peele, best known for Key & Peele, tells the story of a black man who meets his girlfriend’s white parents for the very first time and comes across unusual and disturbing discoveries.

Call Me By Your Name (3 nominations)

Set in Italy in 1983, Call Me By Your Name tells the story of 17-year-old Elio and his relationship with his father’s research assistant. Timothee Chalamet (who also stars in Lady Bird), 22, is the youngest Best Actor nominee in 80 years. The American actor had to learn Italian to play the character of Elio in the film.

I, Tonya (3 nominations)

I, Tonya is about Tonya Hardling, the talented skater who became the first American woman to complete a triple axel during a competition in 1991. The film follows the incident that changed her life, when in January 1994, her skating rival Nancy Kerrigan was attacked and she was blamed for it.

The Post (2 nominations)

Steven Spielberg’s ‘The Post’ showcases the battle between the US government and the press when a cover-up about the Vietnam War was discovered in the early 1970s. Meryl Streep, who plays Katharine Graham – the country’s first female newspaper publisher – has been nominated for the Best Actress in a Leading Role award.
