Two Promising New Content-Driven Nepali Films Are Releasing This Week

Dashain is in the air — which means the weather’s getting beautiful, people have started planning their holidays, malashree dhun is making a comeback as everyone’s go-to ringtone and of course, numerous films are lined up to hit the big screen.

Right there on the occasion of Ghatasthapana, ‘Behuli From Meghauli’ starts its run on October 3rd. The comedy film starring Swastima Khadka and Nischal Basnet is among the favorites to emerge as this year’s biggest Dashain entertainer. Also starring Bijay Baral, Amir Gautam, Rakshya Thapa, Shishir Siwakoti and Simran Khadka; the film is jointly written and directed by Sajan Kafle and Aakash Baral.

Just a week later, another installment in the most successful Nepali film series, Chakka Panja, will join the race. The fifth film in the franchise might dominate the box office all over again but wait, giving this Deepak-Deepa film a strong fight will be ’12 Gaun’. I know, ‘fight’ does sound too negative but say you what you wanna say, when two films clash, one’s gotta go down. That’s a fact. There have been very few instances when multiple films have released on same day and all of them achieved success. So yeah, it’s a fight — what’s that shit people always say? Yeah, survival of the fittest or something.

What might set ’12 Gaun’ apart this Dashain is its genre, it looks like an out and out action flick which will mark the debut of Samir Bhatta. Dad Biraj, who has directed the film, also plays a major part in it.

Well, that’s not all. There’s a third film that hits the theaters the same day on October 10th — another comedy, ‘Jwai Saab’. This one’s got Jitu Nepal and Niti Shah in the leading roles. Directed by Basanta Niraula, the film also stars Buddhi Tamang and Himesh Panta.

It’s gonna be a Royal Rumble type shit at the box office.

But before all these biggies come out, there are two smaller films which will start their box office run right this week, on 27th of September. When I say small, I just mean they are made on a smaller scale with lower budgets than the previous films we talked about. They also haven’t got “stars” but both of these films seem to have a solid cast and if their trailers are anything to go by, they seem like well worth your money.

The first one is ‘Sano Sansar’. You might be wondering why that title sounds so familiar — nope not because of the Karma – Namrata Shrestha film (well, a little may be, but they have no connections at all); but it’s because of the incomplete web series of same name that had released on YouTube last year. Honestly, I was so mad at these folks when they just left the series incomplete after the release of few episodes due to financial reasons. I mean, they had done it before as well. I understand the limited resources they had with these projects, but still, I had loved their work and just wanted to watch the complete work. Anyway, I was happy to find out that ‘Sano Sansar’ was picked to be made a full fledged feature film that would actually be released on silver screen.

The film brings back the original cast, with just few changes here and there; and most importantly, it’s helmed by Siddhartha Pudasaini himself — the original showrunner. The film tells the story of an ordinary middle class family and I am sure a lot, I mean a lot of us will be able to relate to the plot. I just hope they have kept the mood of the film quite similar to that of the series itself — humorous and a pinch of emotional masala, not entirely a full on melodrama.

Another one is called ‘Aankha’. It also seems to deal with extremely difficult financial situation of the lead characters — a newly married couple — who live in a slum. It kinda gives that ‘Parasite’ vibe, minus the thrilling second half; but who knows, might take us by surprise and turn out to be more than a drama. But whatever it is, it sure looks good. The two new actors, Smita Lamichane and RK Mehta, do look promising. Nisha Adhikari, Bijay Baral, Buddhi Tamang, Pashupati Rai, Pravin Khatiwada and Loonibha Tuladhar also play significant roles in the film directed by Zaun Yonzon.

Strong line up of films ahead, so cinema herna jaau.
