Kengal Mehar Shrestha didn’t really have one of the smoothest auditions in Nepal Idol. The three judges weren’t really sure of her talent when she sang ‘O Mero Priyatam’ in front of them when she showed up in the Kathmandu auditions of the first season of the reality television show; and she was asked to sing another song as well. She then sang Ciney Gurung’s ‘Mann’ that convinced the judges that she actually has what they were looking for. And well, the rest is history.
As Kengal made it through various rounds of the show, she kept earning a good fan following – along with the judges’ appreciation. She was one of the top ten contestants in the competition.

While most of her fellow contestants from the show have already released their original songs and music videos; she hadn’t released one until now; when on Tuesday night, she finally released her debut single. The song is called ‘Shabda’ and it’s penned by Rabi Malla. Kalyan Singh has composed the song that is beautifully sung by Kengal. The soft romantic number has a cute music video that features Kengal herself along with Ashish Ranjit.
A work of Jazz Productions, the music video directed and edited by Aneel Neupane is filmed in Kalinchawk. “Shabda is a love song and we wanted to have a beautiful location to shoot the music video; and we’re glad we settled on Kalinchawk. That place was heaven”, Kengal recalls. “The song talks about the feelings of a person towards her beloved.”

Post her Nepal Idol stint, Kengal has done a number of shows in and outside Nepal. She has performed in Dubai, Qatar, S. Korea, UK, Australia and Hong Kong; along with various parts of Nepal. She is part of a band called Pitchfork.
