You guys, it looks like the ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire’ television show franchise is coming to Nepal soon.
There hasn’t been an announcement or anything but we really, really think that the popular television game show is on its way to Nepal. And, why exactly?
We came across a video on YouTube which is titled ‘Teaser’; and it has been published by a new channel that has recently been created and it’s called SRBN Media Pvt. Ltd. There’s no description of the video and there is not even a single hint what it might be about. However, the About section of the channel reads, “SRBN is an upcoming media house co- founded by four team members that promises to provide programs that entertain, exhilarate and educate in equal measures. Pouring the years of experience gained in their respective fields of journalism, education, engineering, etc.”
So, here’s what happens in the teaser.
Bholaraj Sapkota, the popular actor who had played an important role in Anurag Basu’s 2012 Bollywood film ‘Barfi’ starring Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra, is having tea in a small shop.
While enjoying the cup, he is talking with the owner – telling him some interesting facts about tea, population of some countries and what not. But the tea-seller isn’t interested in his talks and takes a jibe at him, saying, “No matter how intelligent you are, both me and you are here”, – making Bholaraj upset.
And suddenly there’s some Akashvani (voice from the sky) – with the theme music of ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?’ playing in the background – “Yahi buddhile mero bhagya badline din chhitai aaudainchha.” (This very intelligence of mine will change my days very soon.)
Here, watch the teaser.
Pay close attention to the music that plays in the background. And now listen to this.
Similar, right?
Now, there can be two things. One, it’s going to be the official Nepali version of the television franchise. Second, it might be another show with similar content. We don’t really think that they would have copied the exact theme music if it wasn’t the official version as there would be consequences, some serious consequences.
So, yep, we really think that it’s the official franchise.
But then again, the prize money of Rs. 1 Crore is a big deal in Nepal. It won’t be easy for the contestants to win the amount though, but still, there would be quite a number of contestants who would be going home with some good amounts of prize money. We are not sure if the budget is something that can be worked on but let’s not forget that both Nepal Idol and Himalaya Roadies- two of the most popular Nepali television shows last year – had huge budgets involved. So, there’s definitely the possibility that the top prize could be upto Rs. 1 Crore – if the show is based on the Indian version, Kaun Banega Crorepati. Or they can just call it something similar to its original title, ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire’ and set the top prize at Rs. 10 Lakh.
These are just some of our speculations on what the teaser might be about and we really hope the prediction is right like the time we wrote about the possibility of Got Talent franchise coming to Nepal and it turned out to be true. We’ll keep you posted as soon as there’s any confirmation.
The original U.S. version of the show had started in 1999 and was aired on ABC. The Indian version – Kaun Banega Crorepati – on the other hand, was premiered in 2000 on Star Plus.
