Sunkesari: Reecha Sharma-Arpan Thapa’s Next Is A Horror Flick Filmed In Australia

When we think of Nepali horror films – well, we don’t really have to think quite a lot – because there are hardly any films made in this genre. And the films that were made were not ‘scary’ enough to excite the audience. When we really think of a Nepali horror film, Bhusan Dahal’s Kagbeni might be the one name that strikes but then again, the Saugat Malla, Nima Rumba, Deeya Maskey starrer wasn’t an out-and-out horror flick. And that’s why, you know, we still crave a Nepali horror film that can actually serve its purpose.

Reecha Sharma, after producing ‘Aadha Love’, is coming back as a producer and this time, she has chosen a horror film. Yes, a HORROR film, titled ‘Sunkesari’. “I have not watched any horror film from our film industry which is scary enough”, said Sharma when asked about Nepali horror films in general and her expectations with her upcoming film. “With Sunkesari, we are confident that the audience will be on the edge of their seats.”

The film has been shot in the historical castle Camelot at Kirkham in Australia. Quite an expensive fee of NPR 3.5 million has been spent just for the location. “We needed a castle in Australia and we came to know about Camelot from a popular Australian TV series ‘A Place To Call Home’ which, too, was filmed in the very house”, said Sharma. “Though the location fee was high, it’s totally worth it as the house is actually the main character in our film.”

The ‘Talkjung vs Tulke’ actress plays the titular role in the film written and directed by Arpan Thapa. “It was another great experience working with him after Aadha Love”, she says. The Nepali and Australian cast and crew worked together to complete the film that is currently under post production. Rabindra Jha, Lauren Loberg and Sunny Dhakal will also be seen essaying important characters in the film.

“This house has a long history”, Sharma talks about the house that has witnessed quite a number of deaths and suicides. According to MacarthurAdvertiser, the house owner James White and his wife died in the house in 1890 and 1897, respectively. Another owner William Anderson committed suicide in 1912 and his wife Frances Faithfull died in 1948. “We felt and experienced some really scary and spooky stuff while shooting. It’s just unexplainable”, Sharma adds.

Sunkesari will hit the theaters in Nepal in 2018.

Well, we hope the film succeeds in making the audience believe that Nepali filmmakers, too, can nail the horror genre.
