It’s official, White Sun (Seto Surya) is Nepal’s submission for Oscars 2018.
Nepal’s Oscars selection committee has selected Deepak Rauniyar’s award winning directorial drama to be the official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards, scheduled to take place on March 4, 2018 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles.
The Dayahang Rai, Asha Magrati and Rabindra Singh Baniya starrer had premiered at Venice Film Festival in September last year. After traveling across the world for the screenings at various international film festivals in Toronto, Busan, Mumbai and Singapore, among others; the film produced by Deepak Rauniyar, Joslyn Barnes, Tsering Rhitar Sherpa and Michel Merkt had released in Nepal in December last year.
The film beat Navin Awal’s ‘Bijuli Machine’ – the only other film that was competing with ‘White Sun’ for the Oscars submission- to represent Nepal at the Academy Awards. However, the road ahead is not easy as it will have to compete with dozens of other films from across the world to win one of the five spots to be nominated for the prestigious film award.
