Sydney To Host Nepali Food Festival This Week

For the first time in Australia, a food festival entirely dedicated to Nepali cuisine is taking place. The event called Tasting Nepal will fend off the food cravings of all the Nepali food lovers in Sydney on Saturday, April 8th. The Nepali food festival will have the stalls of some of the most loved restaurants in Sydney such as O! Momo, Muglan Yak & Yeti, Nimto, AD’s Kitchen, Vutu, Maiti Fusion, Red Capsicum and Bhojan among others. That’s not it yet; apart from these local restaurants, the event will also have a stall of Bajeko Sekuwa, one of the most popular chain restaurants in Nepal. Chetan Bhandari, CEO of Bajeko Sekuwa, along with the Corporate Chef Kumar Chalise will be flying all the way to Sydney to be a part of this special event.

The event organized by Two Tables in association with Pacific Hospitality And Culinary Academy will also have other fun activities and Nepali cultural shows to keep the visitors entertained.

“Nepali community is still young but a fast growing community in Sydney. The early Nepali migrants are said to have moved to Australia in the 1980s. Dr. Narayan Pradhan, one of those first migrants says he had to travel all the way from Sydney to Melbourne to buy Nepali herbs and spices when his wife was pregnant and craved some home-style meal”, Suraj Pradhan, Co-Founder of Two Tables who also was a part of the team that set up a pop-up restaurant at Everest Base Camp in December last year, shares. “From back then to today, things have developed so rapidly that there are more than fifty Nepali restaurants and grocery stores in Sydney alone that sell Nepali foods and spices.”

“We wanted to put out a display of authentic menu and promote our cuisines. And with the sole purpose of promoting our food heritage, we came up with the idea of this festival,” he further adds. The organizers are looking forward to take this event not only to other Australian cities but the Nepalese capital as well.

There’s no entry fee but the organizers will be accepting donations from the visitors for Laprak Model Settlement, an initiation by NRNA for its Nepal Earthquake Rebuilding Project.

The event is scheduled from 11 AM to 7 PM at Belmore Park at Central Station. Follow the event’s Facebook page for further details. Here’s the promo video.
