If you’re a concertgoer, you might have noticed that almost half, and sometimes even more, attendees at music events are women. But on stage, the numbers tell a completely different story. Apart from all the other sectors in Nepal, the music industry too is male-dominated, we just can’t deny that fact even if we want to. The number of female artists performing at a concert in Nepal as compared to their male counterparts is generally between zero to twenty five percent, maximum, in general.
Nirbhaya Foundation’s Women In Concert is trying to change that figure. The annual event that takes place on International Women’s Day every year is all set for this year as well with a kickass lineup. Three all girl bands – Shree Tara, JOTs and House of Hope will be rocking the stage this year. Shree Tara and House of Hope will be performing for the second consecutive year at the event, whereas JOTs will be debuting this year. Apart from these three bands, Abhaya and the Steam Injuns and Mental Radio along with the three winners of the Talent Hunt WIC 2016; Megha Shrestha, Sunita Thegim and Ishara Chamling are all geared up to wow the audience.
The event that has been taking place in Kathmandu had went international in 2015 when Abhaya and the Steam Injuns along with over a dozen Nepali female artists in the UK performed in London at WIC UK Edition organized by Origami Radio. This year, the organizers are looking forward to take the event to Pokhara, Dharan, Butwal, Damauli and Urlabari as well. As the audiences don’t have to pay any money at these events, a GoFundMe account has been set to raise money and make it happen. If you wish to, you can donate HERE.
Women In Concert over the years has proved to be not just another music event but a platform for the young ladies who wish to make a difference and bring some good changes. It aims to empower women through music. Here’s how Abhaya Subba, the president of Nirbhaya Foundation, describes it.
The event sponsored by the Embassy of Switzerland and supported by Turkish Airlines will be hosted by Malvika Subba. It takes place at Lainchaur Grounds on March 8th from 3 PM. And of course, the entry is free.
