Five Positive Things We Can Be Proud of From Basantpur Acid Attack Incident

Sunday, Feb 22nd was supposed to be just a regular day for Sangita Magar and Sima Basnet. Just like every other day, they woke up early and reached A Plus tuition center in Jhochhen, Basantpur to prepare for the upcoming SLC exams. They had never even thought in their worst nightmares that something horrible would happen that morning that would change their lives forever. They didn’t even notice when a guy entered the classroom and suddenly their faces were burning.

Acid attack is new to Nepal and this was one of the rare cases, which shocked the entire nation. Everything about this incident was so horrible that we felt ashamed of being a Nepali. But if we look at some things that happened after the incident, they will actually make us proud of being a Nepali. Here is a list of five things that will make you feel good:

#5. Unity

Every Nepali, living at home or abroad, who heard about the news was shocked. Everyone actually felt the pain of these two girls. They got united and got motivated to do something for these girls. Protest rallies were conducted to build pressure on police to arrest the criminal as soon as possible. The ‘Bir Gorkhalies’ didn’t rake the help of violence this time to demand justice but peace and unity.

#4. Financial Support/Donations

People came in front to help the girls financially. Donations were collected directly and online to get the girls the best treatments and not to let the two families think that they are alone on this.

#3. Educational Scholarship

Just like other youngsters and students, Sangita and Sima too have dreams and ambitions for their futures. A cowardly action from a maniac shouldn’t and won’t stop them from dreaming. Just to ensure that, Nobel Academy recently gave scholarship to both the girls for Grade 11 & 12 Science Stream worth NPR 1,57,000.

#2. Attending SLC Exams

No one can deny the fact that these two girls are physically and mentally very strong. They were studying hard for SLC exam preparations before the incident took place and even after the unfortunate incident. Both the girls are now attending ‘Iron Gate’ exams from the hospitals. Sima is writing her exams herself and Sangita has been provided with an assistant to write her exams.

#1. Perpetrator Arrested

The biggest relief is that the perpetrator of the attack has been arrested by the police and he has accepted his crime. It surely is a praiseworthy work by Nepal police. Hopes are strong that he will get a deserving sentence for his hideous crime.

The incident actually opened the eyes of every Nepali. It proved that we can make things right if we just unite. What do you think are the other things related with the incident that were praiseworthy? Do share your views in the comment section below.
