Box Office Clash: Bang Bang Vs Haider

Thursday, October 2nd will witness one of the biggest box office clashes. Two of the biggest movies of the year are all set to release on the same day. At one side, there is Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif starer action packed movie Bang Bang, directed by Sidhhartha Manon which is the remake of Hollywood flick Knight and Day. On the other hand, there is ‘Haider’, written and directed by Vishal Bhadrdwaj and starring Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor, which is based on William Shakespeare’s famous novel ‘Hamlet’.

For one, Hrithik Roshan would be undoubtedly a bigger star to bet on but Shahid Kapoor is nevertheless up with his finest performance who might give the former a run for the money.

Now the big question which strikes our wits is how will the box office behave when these flicks hit the theatres? Well, that’s tricky and is too early to predict but there have been few occasions when two big flicks have come face to face on a same date and performed equally well.

In 2012 it was an exceptional case when Yash Chopra’s last directorial ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ starring Shah Rukh Khan and Ashwini Dheer’s multi-starrer ‘Son of Sardar’ hit at Diwali and both sailed well. After a healthy competition both of them entered the Rs 100 cr club. On this basis there could be a win-win situation for both of these Gandhi Jayanti releases.

But contrary to that, there is more number of cases where we got to see one-sided competition despite big names being attached in both the flicks. Among them, it was Farhah Khan and Sajay Leela Bhansali’s glossy dramas ‘Om Shanti Om’ and ‘Saawariya’ in 2007.

On the weighing bar the pin fell heavily towards the Shah Rukh Khan and debutant Deepika Padukone starrer. Both flicks were made at a heavy budget and promoted on a massive scale but ‘Saawariya’ despite having Salman Khan in a supporting role couldn’t sail well at box office.

Also there has been instance where one big flick’s failure is other movie’s success. In 2008, Abhishek Bachchan’s superhero flick ‘Drona’ disappointed the audience badly which in turn made the movie goers venture into Imran Khan’s Kidnap, despite this movie too was given a thumbs down. But Minisha Lamba’s glamorous avatar and Sanjay Dutt’s presence worked in favour of the flick.

Now in which category Shahid Kapoor’s Haider and Hrithik Roshan’s Bang Bang will fall in, time will tell.
