Mani Bikram Shah, one of the most legendary footballers Nepal has ever produced, has passed away while undergoing treatment at the Norvic International Hospital in Kathmandu. “Shah died of liver failure around 5:42 PM this evening”, official at the hospital informed.
The 51-year-old former national footballer was admitted to the hospital on Sunday evening.
In 1985, Shah had debuted for Nepal at age 17 in the 2nd South Asian Games held in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Six years later – in 1993 – Shah was an important part of the team that won Nepal its only gold medal in the 6th South Asian Games. He announced his retirement from football in 1997 after playing for the country for twelve years.
He was fondly known as ‘Nepali Maradona’.
Rest in peace, legend!
