The Harvey Weinstein scandal has encouraged many women around the world to come forth and share their experiences of work place harassment.
Several actresses have recently accused Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault and harassment. And looks like, there are a number of such Harvey Weinsteins in Nepal as well and a lot of women have to face such abusers on daily basis.
Shivani Singh Tharu, on Sunday, took to her Twitter handle to share her story. The writer and media personality who started off her career as a presenter on Nepal Television wrote, “We also have people like Hollywood’s sexual harasser Harvey Weinstein. I too had to face such Harveys during my tenure in Nepal Television”. It was followed by another tweet that read, “Touching my chest with their arm while passing by, asking ‘what’s up?’ while rubbing my back, calling me ‘Maiya’ instead by my name – the Nepali Harveys I came across”.

Shivani Singh Tharu had started working at Nepal Television when she was 18. During her tenure there, she hosted a number of shows, ‘Mero Geet, Mero Sandesh’ being the most popular one.
Quite a lot of Nepali women have joined the online #MeToo movement, that was started by actress Alyssa Milano earlier this month and encouraged women to tweet it to publicize experiences to demonstrate the widespread nature of misogynistic behavior.
The two-word hashtag campaign has taken the internet by storm, over 5 million people are engaged in the #metoo conversation with over 10 million posts on various social media platforms.
