Google recently unveiled a pair of headphones that can translate Nepali and 39 other languages in real time.

Google unveiled Pixel Buds earbuds, the company’s first pair of wireless headphones that can translate 40 different languages in real-time, during an event held at the SFJazz Center in San Fransisco last week. Pixel Buds debuted alongside Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones, Google Homi Mini, Home Maz, Pixelbook and an add-on camera named Clips.

Apart from acting as your own personal translator, listening to music, too, is fun and easy with the new earbuds. You can simply tap the earbud to start music and swipe forwards or backwards to adjust volume.

Pixel Buds – accompanied by Google’s virtual ‘Assistant’ – will deliver notifications such as upcoming events on your calendar or recent text messages; when you double tap.

Translations are available in forty languages including Nepali, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Finnish, Swedish, and Dutch.

“Say you’re in Little Italy, and you want to order your pasta like a pro. All you have to do is hold down on the right earbud and say, ‘Help me speak Italian”, Adam Champy, Product Manager, wrote on Google’s blog. “As you talk, your Pixel phone’s speaker will play the translation in Italian out loud. When the waiter responds in Italian, you’ll hear the translation through your Pixel Buds.”

Pixel Buds comes with up to 5 hours of continuous use on a single battery charge, or up to 24 hours of charge via its carrying case. The earphones will be available in three colors: Just Black, Clearly White and Kinda Blue. Priced at $159, Pixel Buds will be available in the U.S. in November.

So, is the Babel fish dream of in-ear translation now a reality? So it seems. We just hope Google works on making the translations more accurate as well.
