Jolly Amatya was appointed as the ‘Youth Chair’ for the Youth Assembly at the United Nations last year when she led the Youth Assembly that took place between August 10th to 12th. She recently led the Youth Assembly for the second time at the United Nations.
The assembly held from February 1st to 3rd witnessed the presence of over 1,000 youth delegates from around the world, along with a number of UN officials and diplomats, and representatives from intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations who were gathered there to tackle young people’s role in realizing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
In her opening remarks, Amatya focused on the urgency of attaining a world of solidarity and unity. “Today, we proudly represent more than 85 countries in this prestigious General Assembly Hall. I am proud to represent my country Nepal, where the epitome of peace, Lord Buddha was born and I believe that we all are in our own ways ambassadors of peace, love, compassion and kindness to this world”, she said. “It is not only a challenge and a shared responsibility, but a moral obligation as global citizens.” She urged on all the youth around the world to come together and take action in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
The Youth Assembly is the largest and the longest running youth conference at the United Nations. It is a unique platform which fosters dialogue and generates partnerships between exceptional youth, UN high officials and staff, the private sector and the civil society.
The program of the 19th session of the Youth Assembly at the United Nations is developed by Friendship Ambassadors Foundation in partnership with International Labor Organization (ILO), United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and UNESC. Under the theme “Realizing the 2030 Agenda: Youth in Action”, the conference aimed to explore multifaceted issues such as poverty, education, and sustainable consumption and production, with an emphasis on the integrated nature of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Amatya initially joined Youth Assembly in 2013 as a youth representative of Nepal. In a short span of less than three years, she has been successful in being promoted to the top most coveted and prestigious leadership role. In her professional experience gained over the last seven years in the United States, she has worked with diverse administrations and bodies such as the United Nations, UN Women, WFUNA, the World Bank, Habitat for Humanity and Action Aid International.
