In Conversation With Aayush Rimal: Nepal’s Favorite YouTuber

YouTube is full of amazingly talented people – singers, dancers, comedians, actors and many more. And it’s really tough to stand out from the crowd and make your mark. There are many Nepali YouTubers who are trying hard to make their presence felt and some of them have succeeded to some extent as well. Aayush Rimal is one such name that has emerged as a talented young YouTuber from Nepal. It won’t be wrong to say that he is Nepal’s favorite YouTuber presently. The 18-year-old boasts a good number of 40k+ likes on his Facebook page, over 17k followers on Instagram and around 29k subscribers with over 3.5 million views on his YouTube channel. He started YouTubing back in 2013 and immediately rose to fame with his video “Nepali Douchebags in FB” and the rest is history. Currently based in Texas, USA; he is actively making and uploading various videos and vines on several social media platforms. To know about his journey so far and his future plans, we talked to him recently. Excerpts.

1. Why and how did you start the journey?

I basically love trying new things. Once, a friend of mine suggested me to watch Ryan Higa’s video on YouTube. After watching the video, I was so inspired that I started remaking his videos and uploaded them on my YouTube channel. Eventually, I started writing my original contents and filmed them to upload them.

2. What was your first video about and what kind of responses did you get for it?

To be honest, this was a totally unplanned journey and I did’t actually plan to be a YouTuber. I just had camera phone and I wanted to make use of it. I made many videos which were never published online. My first few videos were actually no longer than 10 seconds. And my first official video happened to be the one in which I read out various people’s Facebook statuses that went so viral that it had over 5,000 views overnight, which was unexpected. I literally jumped on my bed in excitement as people had loved my work. That motivated me a lot and I continued making more videos.

3. Who are some of your favorite Nepali and international YouTubers?

Prankster Revival, GDiipa, Nicky Karki and Sneha Khati are some of my favorite Nepali YouTubers. My favorite international YouTuber and my inspiration is Ryan Higga, who has over 16 million subscribers. Phew!

4. Do you think it’s possible for you to be a professional YouTuber and make a living out of it? Why or why not?

For now, I don’t think that’s possible. Most of my videos are in Nepali which makes my channel limited to a specific audience only. With the problems such as slow internet speed and load-shedding, people in Nepal can’t spend a lot of time online which makes it even more difficult to reach a large number of people. But as they, nothing is impossible, if I continue creating productive and interesting contents, may be someday I will be actually making a living out of it. But at the moment, I haven’t even thought about it.

5. Which part of the video making is the most difficult one? Is it the writing, acting, editing or anything else?

Sometimes scripting is the hardest part but most of the time, editing is the hardest one. But I love doing it so much that even though it’s stressful, I enjoy it. I have even spent the whole night until the dawn editing videos.

6. Which according to you is the one video that played the hugest part in your journey so far?

I think my video titled “Douchebags On Facebook” played a huge part in my journey. If I hadn’t received such an amazing responses for it, I don’t think I’d have enough motivation to make more videos. Also, “Speaking Nepali With American” and “Interview With Nepali Models” have brought a lot of adult audience for me.

7. Which is your personal favorite video of yours?

‘Talk Show With Nepali Models’ is my personal favorite. There are a few reasons; firstly, I had to put a lot of effort to make that video. Secondly, YES I think it’s funny, and also I think that it’s the video with one of the most creative ideas I’ve spilled on my creation. Lastly, my handwork paid off really well and made it the most viewed video on my YouTube channel.

8. If you had an opportunity to collaborate with an international YouTuber, who would it be?

Definitely, Ryan Higa.

9. Is there any difference in making videos in USA as compared in Nepal?

I don’t thinks there’s a lot of difference. But sometimes, when I try to make patriotic videos, I get a lot of criticism saying that I’m living abroad but still trying to make people believe that I love my country. But the actual thing is, I don’t have to make anyone believe, because it’s in my heart and I love my country more than anything else and I don’t need to prove it to anyone. Sometimes I regret not being in Nepal because of these kinds of criticism. I’m a teenager and it strikes my feelings sometimes. But overall, I don’t think there’s any difference.

10. Apart from YouTubing, what else do you enjoy doing?

I love hanging out with my friends, travelling and exploring new things or places. I love eating so much that I can’t even mention it. And yes of course, what’s better than pizza and Netflix?

11. What are you studying currently?

Right now, I’m doing Bachelors in Computer Science and also studying Audio Video Production.

12. What would you like to do in future?

I’d love to be a part of the Nepali Film Industry, but my first priority is to complete my studies.

13. Would you still be engaged in video-making even if you choose a different path in your career?

I started making videos as a pastime, but it’s something I love doing. I promise to keep making videos until my viewers and fans promise to keep watching them.

14. Any advice you would like to give to an aspiring Youtuber?

Firstly, the most important thing is to be yourself and you should not listen to anyone who’s trying to pull you down because it’s obvious that when you’re climbing the mountain of success, there are going to be a lot of haters who will try their best to pull you down. And lastly, speak loud when you’re in front of the camera. Lol!

15. What would you like to say to your fans and supporters?

I’d like to say that you guys are the reason I’m making all these videos. If you guys were not there supporting me, I’d probably be working at McDonalds right now. Lol! Thank you for always being there for me. Even though we may not know each other personally, there’s a huge amount of thanks that I want to give you for appreciating my work and walking with me on my journey. Keep watching my videos, keep supporting. And HMU sometimes!

16. And what would you like to say to your haters?

Haters have always been spicing up my YouTube journey. Thanks for those few views. Your comments and dislikes make me rich and famous. Love you for that.

17. Thank you for your time!

It was my pleasure. Thank you!
