Dear Samragyee, Thank You For Speaking Up!

I don’t even know what to say. Last couple of weeks, it’s been all about, “I’m here if you ever feel like talking to someone” kinda posts all over social media, encouraging people to share and talk about their problems instead of just keeping them to themselves until it’s too late. Then this girl starts talking about what she has been through and everyone’s like, “How dare you?”

You most probably know this already but in case you don’t, Samragyee RL Shah exposed the true faces of some biggies in Nepali cinema with a 12-minute IGTV video, without even taking a single name.

Inspired by Kangna Ranaut and her fearless videos on Instagram exposing Bollywood stars and filmmakers post Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, the ‘Intu Mintu Londonma’ actress, too, took to her Instagram handle to talk about incidents she had to experience, mostly when she was a newbie.

Samragyee had a debut that most of the aspiring actresses can only wish for. She was cast opposite Anmol KC, who was the newest heart-throb in town, in a Bhuwan KC film. The 2016 film was called ‘Dreams’ and it was supposed to make her dreams come true, but turns out it was more like a nightmare.

In the video, she talks about how the newcomers are taken advantage of, how they are lied to and how badly they are treated and even harassed but one can’t do anything about it as these are the very people who control everything and can ruin your career. She recalls how she was abused at a set in front of the entire crew and cast when she complained about not getting meals or water.

The video was sure to create waves, and Samragyee knew it very well but what she probably didn’t expect was that it will get so worse for her that few days from the video’s release, she will be having panic attacks.

For some reason, Bhuwan KC knew she was talking about him and he was quick to defend himself as he wrote on Facebook how ungrateful Samragyee is.

Then there were the people, the brilliant people who are the future of this nation. I can’t even. Just go through any of the links that’s about Samragyee’s videos and you will find these magnificent minds talking about how it’s her fault. The reasons? Don’t even ask. Because she took a vacation abroad where she took some bikini pictures. Because she has nothing better to do. Because she wants to create controversy. Because she is ghamandi. And here’s my favorite one: Why didn’t she speak up when it happened?

Arey bhai, gajjab kura garchhau yaar!

When a newcomer speaks up, you know that she is doing this for a quick fame. Hoina? (Remember Sharon Shrestha?) And when she works hard, achieves success and becomes somebody who is heard and then speaks up, you’re like, “Liar. Why didn’t she say anything about it earlier?”

Either way, she is the one to be blamed.

It’s never too late to stand up for yourself or somebody else. And it’s not always easy to. A person who has been through a lot is an easy target for everyone but it doesn’t have to be that way. If you can’t be there for someone, at least don’t make it even harder for them.

And dear Samragyee, thank you for showing this courage. You might not know this but there are people, right in your industry and outside, who must have been thanking you for bringing this to light. They might not be ready to tell their story yet but you surely have inspired them.

You go, girl!
